From health counselling and pharmacy calls to the medical on-call service and paediatric telephonists:

Health issues?
1450 offers quick help.

Pain often occurs suddenly and is disconcerting. In many situations, it is difficult to determine whether the symptoms are caused by minor problems that you can treat quickly and easily yourself, or whether these are signals that the body is sending to indicate something more serious and should be taken seriously.

The Health Hotline 1450 is the first point of contact for health-related questions in precisely such cases.

Health counselling: What can I do for my own health? Who can help me or which stage in the care system is the right one for me (e.g. GPs and health centres, specialists, hospital, etc.)? How urgent is my health problem, i.e. do I need medical care today?

Finding a pharmacy: Information on pharmacies that are open, with contact details sent by SMS; you can also find information on pharmacies that are open at apothekerkammer.at/apothekensuche.

Medical on-call service: Information on doctors’ surgeries that are open, also available online at ordinationen.st

House call doctors: If necessary, the 1450 staff will organise for the caller to be seen by a doctor who will do a house call.

Paediatricians: On weekends, a paediatrician is also available via the Health Hotline 1450.

Psychosocial care: Information about or connection to relevant contact points

Call:

  • The caller dials 1450 or is forwarded from 144 to 1450 and first hears the data protection notice (mandatory by law)
  • The call is then picked up by 1450 call taker (trained paramedics)

The call taker performs triaging (initial assessment):

  • Potentially critical patient: The call is immediately forwarded to Emergency Services 144
  • Caller requires health information (e.g. information on surgeries that are open): The caller receives this information directly from the 1450 call taker, od the call may be forwarded (e.g. to the pharmacy on duty)
  • Detailed health counselling: The caller is forwarded to or called back by a registered healthcare and nursing professional (DGKP)

The information on the caller’s health questions and problems is provided by a registered healthcare and nursing professional. Registered healthcare and nursing professionals work with a standardised system throughout Austria that uses medical and scientific criteria to determine how urgent the need for care is. The healthcare professional discusses these questions with the caller. The healthcare professional also always has access to a doctor available with whom they can discuss medical questions. On weekends, a paediatrician is also available for callers to speak to (if necessary).
The registered healthcare professionals also advise callers on what they can do themselves (self-treatment) and – if necessary – when they need which type of care (e.g. going to a hospital outpatient clinic for acute situations, or to a doctor in private practice the next day for less urgent cases). If necessary, the healthcare professional will also arrange for the caller to be seen by an on-call doctor.

Calls to the Health Hotline 1450 are free of charge. Callers only pay the usual telephone costs according to their tariff. The number 1450 can be dialled 365 days a year at any time of day or night – even on weekends.
